Dr Matthew Ng
Matthew holds a PhD in Spatial Data Science from the Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London, an MSc in International Planning from the Bartlett School of Planning (UCL), and a BSc (Hons) in Biology from the University of Manchester.
Dr Matthew Ng is a Scientia Fellow and research data scientist at the City Futures Research Centre. His work focuses on applying spatial analytics, machine learning, and AI to understand patterns in housing, planning, transport, and property markets. He develops both advanced models and applied methods to help governments, industry, and communities respond to urban and economic challenges.
He was appointed as ÑÇÃÀÆåÅÆ’s first Industry Scientia Fellow in 2022, a role designed to support long-term, co-developed research with external partners. This is conducted through a formal partnership with PEXA, with his current work exploring how valuation and housing data systems can be improved through scalable, interpretable, and real-time modelling approaches.
Since joining ÑÇÃÀÆåÅÆ in 2020, Matthew has helped drive the CFRC's applied research agenda, working at the intersection of data science - from advising on housing supply strategy for the NSW Government to working with non-profits on issues like rental vulnerability and homelessness. He serves as the Asia-Pacific Lead for the Colouring Cities Research Programme, coordinated by the Alan Turing Institute, where he works with researchers and data custodians to make city data more open, reliable, and usable.
He welcomes research students interested in spatial modelling, housing systems, urban data infrastructure, and applied machine learning.
