Overview
Fig Tree Hall offers a supportive and respectful community where residents can engage in social activities without the presence of alcohol, making it ideal for those seeking a balanced, respectful living environment that aligns with their personal values and cultural backgrounds. It sets the benchmark for a college of its kind in Australia.
You’ll be supported by an on-site team consisting of the Dean, Deputy Dean, and Resident Mentors (or RMs). Each floor has an RM tasked with offering academic guidance and pastoral support and ensuring the well-being of all residents.
We run peer-led study groups to help students adjust to the academic requirements of university study. We also host study sessions and uplifting wellbeing programs guided by our Wellbeing Officer. This helps everyone smoothly transition from high school to university!
Meet Victoria
Originally from Shenyang, China, Victoria began her Bachelor of Psychological Science at ÑÇÃÀÆåÅÆ in 2023. This year, she has taken on a leadership role as Social Director at Fig Tree Hall.

"I went to an international high school in China where I also lived on campus, but coming to Fig Tree Hall really brought me out of my shell. I’ve become more outgoing. I love talking with people, hearing about their day, and making fun memories together."
-
"Living at Fig Tree Hall feels like being part of a family, not just a group of students. We’ve made so many memories together. It’s not just classmates from tutorials, they’re real connections. That sense of belonging has been the highlight for me."
-
"Being a Social Director at Fig Tree Hall has been such a fun and fulfilling part of my ÑÇÃÀÆåÅÆ journey. I’m proud of creating events and games that bring people together — seeing everyone happy and enjoying themselves feels like a real achievement."
When I first moved to Sydney, I lived in the city but dreamed of living on campus. After classes, I’d wander the campus and imagine how nice living here would be. When I moved to college, everything became easier. Finally, I could get to classes on time, focus on my studies, play football, and use the facilities freely. Plus, having catered meals makes things so much easier!

When you live on campus, you’re surrounded by familiar faces at uni and college, so there’s a real sense of community. It’s so easy to make friends and feel at home. There’s always someone around to help, whether it’s friends studying the same degree or the college staff and resident mentors.Â

Living on campus made it easy to settle into Sydney life. I don’t need a car. I can bike or use the light rail to get anywhere. It also gives me extra time and energy for socialising and study. Having friends around to study with keeps me motivated and means I never have to choose between connection and academic focus.

Rasheed Khan | Dean of Fig Tree Hall
As an international student from Pakistan, I understand from my own experience that adjusting to life in a foreign land can be quite challenging. Creating a new social support network and navigating a different academic system also presents difficulties. I was a student at the University Hall in 2014. I quickly realised how much I value what collegiate life offers students in similar situations. Wanting to give back, I took on staff roles within the community. I served as a Resident Fellow and Deputy Dean. I became Dean at Fig Tree in 2016. Fig Tree has a unique identity as the most culturally diverse and progressive college. It provides a rare opportunity for Australian and overseas students to share and learn from one another.
The ability to mentor and support students is what truly drives me. I’ve seen students transform from uncertain first-years into confident leaders who excel in their studies. Supporting them through this journey and watching them grow is what makes this job so rewarding.
Lauren Medlin | Deputy Dean of Fig Tree Hall
Hi, I’m Lauren, your Deputy Dean for Fig Tree Hall. I'm very excited to meet everyone! This year I'll be around to help guide you through your college and university life, providing pastoral care, academic support, and additional advice and resources as needed.Â
In my spare time you might find me reading, playing social netball or watching the same TV show for the 80th time. In the last 6 years I have lived in Sydney, Tamworth, Port Macquarie and the Central Coast, and I am so excited to call Fig Tree my new home! In my spare time you might find me reading, relaxing, or heading to the gym. I'm super excited to meet everyone and can't wait for a great year together!
House Committee
The House Committee is composed of student leaders elected annually by residents in various portfolios aimed at offering residents opportunities to be involved in extra-curricular activities. The House Committee includes an executive group of a president, secretary and treasurer and administers a budget each year across areas such as cultural, sport, social, charities and communications.
Resident Mentors
Resident Mentors (RMs) are staff members of ÑÇÃÀÆåÅÆ who are typically in their final years of study or already hold a degree. RMs live with the students on their floors and provide daily academic and pastoral support. They aren’t teachers, but they’re a little like supportive older siblings with loads of experience to pass on and a willingness to help guide the residents.
